This is an academic overview of the Professional Music Program
Our program is focused on the occupationally-oriented music student whose career goals can best be reached by developing and improving skills in music production, performance, or music writing. Students may earn a one-year certificate by completing 50 credit hours including 39 credit hours of required professional music courses, eight credit hours of elective professional music courses and three credits of writing (WR 115 of above).
- What skills do I need?
Professional music courses emphasize a broad range of skills from the technical to the artistic. Graduates of the program are employed in all areas of the music industry. Some are engineers, producers, singers, instrumentalists, songwriters, private instructor and coaches, sound editors, or foley artists.
- How much can I earn?
The ever-changing music industry is largely entrepreneurial. This means there is no income limit.
- Who will hire me?
Most music professionals are self-employed or work in partnerships. As a music writer you will work with music groups, studios and publishing houses. Performers will work with clubs and organizations that feature live music, musical groups and bands. As a recording professional you will work independent studios and project partnerships. Most engineers and producers are self-employed. Private music teachers and coaches develop their own clientele and schedules. Many successful industry professional will pursue a variety of activities.
